New Street Station Birmingham, JCDecaux

The Brief

Concept Group have designed and installed three new large format LED displays in the departure hall at Birmingham’s New Street railway station. JCDecaux commissioned the three digital displays each measuring 7.68 meters wide and 1.92 meters tall.

Concept provided an end-to-end build solution for the client, working with the station management team, running all applicable surveys and assessments. The LED displays are mounted in the departure area in the central core of the station above each main exit.

The Solution

Structural support adjustments were made to the existing steelwork inside the station wall cladding, which was replaced between shifts to ensure the appearance of the site was kept as discreet as possible.

Due to space restrictions and to ensure all aspects of heath and safety were met, the steels carrying the framework and lifting mechanisms were designed especially for the project. The lifting arms and display frame steels were brought into the station on a wheeled support.

The two vertical lifting arms were hinged and secured for each lift. With each installation, once inside the station, the arms were assembled. Using a bespoke ratcheted pulley system, the three steel work units were safety guided up into position and secured in place.

The lifting arms were collapsed back down on to the wheeled support which meant the site was then easily cleared in time for the station to open to the public at 4am. The display modules were then installed by hand whilst the wheeled support was removed and the wiring work completed ready for the launch on the 1st of July 2019.

Summary

This project is a superb example of how effectively Concept Group can deliver complex LED display integration in a normally busy area. Working within a restricted 4-hour daily working allowance, the team were able to safely complete works on all three displays to schedule.
